Recap: Peabo Bryson at Alexander Zonjic’s 4th Annual Shoreline Jazz Festival in Muskegon, MI

PeaboSoul singer/songwriter Peabo Bryson had a couple surprises for everyone at Alexander Zonjic’s 4th Annual Shoreline Jazz Festival in Muskegon, MI on August 27, 2017. Known famously for flawlessly fusing R&B with contemporary Pop, Bryson announced he could perform jazz too.

Midway through his set Bryson stood at the center of the Heritage Landing stage holding a beautiful navy blue acoustic guitar. Before treating the audience to an original jazz piece titled “King of Sorrow”, the 66-year-old music icon also announced his wife was expecting their child. While this drew a warm-yet-surprised reception from the crowd, Bryson pointed to someone seated in the front row and joked, “What are you laughing at?” was there to witness Bryson headline the 4th and final day of Shoreline ’17. Its stellar Sunday lineup included John Gist, Yancyy, Alex Bugnon, and Gerald Albright. With all kidding aside, his set was unsurprisingly comprised of feel-good music, the type of tunes that made the South Carolina native a chart-topping Grammy winner.

One of those songs on his set list was a rendition of the Rufus & Chaka Khan hit “Ain’t Nobody”. Flanked by his two backup singers, Bryson had everyone waving their hands in the air. While enjoyable, it was his classic ballads that truly, and quite literally, rocked the crowd.

Bryson’s adoring fans at Shoreline swayed left to right as he performed “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again”, “Tonight, I Celebrate My Love”, “Closer Than Close”, and, appropriately, “Can You Stop the Rain”.

A couple scattered showers tested the Shoreline audience but they stood firm, enduring brief bursts of precipitation throughout the day. It didn’t rain at all while Peabo Bryson was performing, however. Apparently he can stop it. |
